EIC History

How EIC started

EIC2001

In 2001, Mr. Yoichi Funabashi, writer of the column entitled Aete Eigo Kouyougoron (Should English be an Official Language?) in the Asahi Shinbun newspaper contacted us and said, “If we don’t take any measures, the whole Japanese education system will collapse. Why don’t we think and work together to make changes.” Later, Mr. Morihiko Hiramatsu, the former Governor of Oita Prefecture, Mr. Kazuichi Sakamoto, the former President of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), the staff and students from APU, Professor Kensaku Yoshida and students from Sophia University, and an international journalist, Ms. Reiko Kinoshita, joined together with us to help us realize the idea of the English Immersion Camp. As a result, the English Immersion Camp was born as the first long-term camp (10 days or more) in Japan.

About EIC 10th Anniversary Event

10th_Big Our EIC 10th Anniversary Event was successfully held in Osaka on July 30th, 2011. More than 250 people, including past participants and their families, former Camp Leaders, Kumon staff, Kumon Instructors, guests, and EIC 2011 Camp Leaders, gathered to commemorate EIC’s 10th anniversary.

At the event, members who had participated in the Indonesia Study Tour to Jakarta shared what they had learned from their precious experience.

Furthermore, participants listened to two presentations by people who have taken action to support those who suffered from the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. After listening to the presentations, participants were able to share their thoughts and ideas and also discussed their activities and actions contributing to relief and recovery efforts.

The EIC 10th Anniversary Event was a meaningful and motivational day for everyone attending. The Global Network Team will continue to strengthen and enlarge our network.

Today, the EIC network has spread to more than 75 countries and regions throughout the world (as of August, 2014). We would like to make the world a better place by encouraging and supporting one another. We are convinced that if we combine the energy of each and every EIC participant, we can do great things. Let’s make Japan and the world a better place by communicating in English!
